2025 Ford puts the pickup on the calendar
The project is announced
Ford announces its Universal EV Platform and a four-door electric pickup planned for its Louisville Assembly Plant. The target: a starting price around $30,000 and a 2027 launch. The truck does not yet have a public name.

2026 A name, a price and a factory deadline
It becomes the Ford Fathom
Ford reveals the Fathom name, a $28,350 starting MSRP for the standard-range model, and an early 2027 preorder window. There is still no exact order-opening date, complete trim list, EPA range figure or customer delivery schedule. Read Ford's official name reveal.

Ford gives us a production checkpoint
Ford says Louisville is on track to begin building prototypes with production-qualified parts in Q1 2027, with customer vehicles following later in the year. These prototypes will test the path toward production; they are not trucks ready for retail delivery. See Ford's Universal EV production update.

As the Fathom reaches the road, we want owners to have one trusted place to plan, personalize and improve their trucks.
2027 The schedule gets tested
Preorders open — Ford's announced window
Our guess is February or March, although Ford has not announced a day. The next question is what “preorder” means in practice: a reservation, a configurable vehicle order or an order placed through a dealer. Those details will matter to anyone trying to estimate when their own truck might arrive. See Ford's announced preorder window.
Prototype builds — Ford's target
This is the checkpoint we will watch most closely. Ford plans to build prototypes using production-qualified parts at Louisville. If those builds begin on schedule, a late 2027 customer launch looks more credible. If the milestone slips, we would revisit our delivery forecast. Follow the Ford production update.
Full reveal and specifications — our forecast
We expect Ford to show the production design and publish battery, range, charging, trim and option details during this period. Buyers will need that information to choose a truck, and dealers will need time to prepare before deliveries. Ford has not announced a reveal date.
First customer trucks — our forecast
Ford says customer vehicles will follow the prototypes later in 2027. We expect the first retail deliveries in Q4, initially in limited numbers. A production photo, a press vehicle and a truck handed to a paying customer are three different milestones. We will count the last one. Ford's stated customer-vehicle target appears in its production update.
2028 From launch to availability
More trucks at dealers — our forecast
Our bet is that availability improves as Louisville increases output, suppliers settle into production and vehicles reach more dealers. An early preorder holder may receive a Fathom in 2027. Someone who wants to compare trims and buy from local inventory may have a better experience in 2028.
That is our answer to “When does the Fathom come out?” First deliveries: late 2027. Broader availability: 2028. Ford has not published a quarterly production or dealer inventory forecast.
2029 The ownership picture gets clearer
A more established Fathom lineup — our forecast
By 2029, we expect more real-world range and reliability data, used trucks on the market and accessories with proven fitment. We may also know whether Ford intends to expand the Fathom lineup. That is our outlook for the Fathom ecosystem, not an announced Ford model or variant for 2029.
